WHoLE-PVS
Whole House Low Energy Pasive Ventilation System

DTI Partners in Innovation Project Report

Guidlines for implementation of an innovative whole-house ventilation system and its comparison with established approaches to house ventilation -

First Progress Report

Executive Summary

This is the first progress report for the PiI project, Guidelines for implementation of an innovative whole-house ventilation system and its comparison with established approaches to house ventilation, which started in July 2002.

The project aims to demonstrate a successful 'Whole House Low Energy' passive ventilation system (WHOLE-PVS) involving the use of 'supply air' windows in conjunction with passive stack vents (PSV), to reduce overall energy consumption and improve indoor air quality. The WHOLE-PVS has been developed and installed in flats and houses in Denmark, Ireland and Poland under the EU Energie programme. This project aims to demonstrate this proven technology in the UK and disseminate the results through a website and a variety of guidance documents. The demonstration will take the form of a live case study, which will form a focus for the dissemination of the results and be the system's first application in mainland Britain. A comparison will be made with previous applications of other innovative solutions, as well as established technologies such as trickle vents and MVHR.

The project is generally proceeding to schedule. The project management structure has been set up. Three team meetings have been held to review progress and coordinate activities.

This phase of the work programme has been mainly concerned with design activities:

  • A pair of suitable houses, identical in size and similar in orientation, have been selected for the demonstration. The houses are under construction on a housing association estate in Norwich.
  • The specification of the windows has been made and their manufacture is nearing completion for installation in early January 2003.
  • PSV has been designed.
  • The system has been modelled to predict performance and provide feedback to the designers.
Dissemination activities have been initiated through the setting up of the project website and issuing a press release in October 2002.
